Custom Necks

USA Custom Guitars replacement necks offer you the best feel, the most options, and the highest quality available anywhere. All of our necks are crafted with hand selected, time tested tonewoods and feature a vintage style one way truss rod for classic tone and lighter weight.

A number of unique features differentiate our necks from those of our competitors. In fact, it took nearly 2 months to design our neck construction method. We knew that if we were going to do it, it had to be done the RIGHT way, not the quickest or cheapest. We are truly proud of our design and we hope you feel the difference when you play our necks on stage, in the studio, or in your living room.

  • Fretwire slots are cut at the same curve as the fretboard radius, and not just with a straight bottom, as it would be if employing a gangsaw. When the frets are pressed in, there is only a minimal space (if any) between the fret bottom and the fret slot, creating a stiffer neck.
  • We use a slight amount of "fall away", which is where the fingerboard is sloped down below the 12th fret. Every neck we've made from day one has employed the use of "fall away" which is virtually undetectable to the eye - the only thing you'll notice is a great playing neck with cleaner string bending in the higher registers.
  • Truss rod channels are routed with a bullnose bit which creates a round-bottomed channel. This keeps the truss rod well seated inside the neck, for better stability.
  • Thicker necks have deep set truss rods, enabling you to exert more pressure for greater truss rod adjustment.
  • Our truss rod ends are double welded, and not peened (hammered together with a ball-peen hammer), so there's no need to worry about the rod breaking inside the neck. In fact you'd probably strip the screw before breaking the rod!
  • All of our heel adjust necks use a stainless steel adjustment nut (or as we like to call it a "butt nut"), to prevent it from rusting out over time.

Our US-1 neck has a square heel; the US-2, US-3 and US-4 have a rounded heel. Heel shapes are interchangeable at no extra cost. All Bass necks have a rounded heel, unless otherwise specified. We drill for your choice of tuning keys - Kluson, Schaller, Sperzel, Gotoh, Grover, BML, Planet Waves Locking, etc. (Did we leave any out?) Please specify when you place your order.

Standard Guitar Necks

Our standard necks are 25 1/2" scale with a choice of 21 or 22 frets, made with either 1 or 2 piece construction. One piece necks use a walnut skunkstripe. We also make a 25 1/2" scale 12 string neck, as well as a 22 fret 24" scale neck compatible with our Shagwire body or any other 24" scale bolt-on neck instrument.

Retro-fit Conversion Guitar Necks

We offer three different "alternate" scale replacement necks for those looking for a different feel on their favorite bolt-on body.

25" scale - 22 frets
24 3/4" scale - 22 frets
28 5/8" scale baritone - 24 frets

All conversion necks work with any standard (25 1/2" scale) body. Square fingerboard end overhangs are only available on these retro-fit conversion necks - sorry no rounded fingerboard ends due to the way in which the different scale is achieved.

Super Wide Guitar Necks

For those of you who prefer your necks a bit wider, we offer necks with a 1-7/8" nut width for use on both S and T style bodies only. These necks are constructed with a wider heel (2-5/16") to attain the proper string spacing. Guitar necks with this feature are priced the same as our 2 piece Bass Necks. We can make you an S or T style body with a compatible sized neck pocket for the same price as listed in the Custom Body Pricing section - no additional charges for the wider neck pocket.

Standard Bass Necks

We offer 20 or 21 fret 4 string necks with 34" scale length. Our 34" scale 5-string bass necks are 22 frets with a fingerboard overhang and the 35" scale 5-string bass necks are 21 frets with an overhang. We also have 21 fret 30" scale 6 string bass neck to be used with our Baritone-VI body only. As of Octrober 2006, we no longer make 1 piece bass necks.

For you "lefties" out there, we offer any neck in a left handed version at no additional charge. Since we are a true custom shop, of course we can accommodate just about any special requirements you may have. Please give us a call or fax over a Custom Order Quote Form.

Substitute Dark Indian rosewood for an additional $12.00.

Dark Brazilian Rosewood is rarely available, so we cannot offer it as a standard option. We do get some occasionally, so please call and ask if that's what you're looking for.

Simply oiling a lighter rosewood board can darken it a bit - and it will save you a few bucks. We recommend Guitar Honey or linseed oil.

Technology + Craftsmanship

All necks are expertly cut and contoured using state-of-the-art computer controlled routing equipment. This is definitely NOT you're average 'woodshop out back!'

The result: a perfectly contoured neck ready for finish sanding. OEM customers can expect absolute consistency in multiple run construction.

Rounded fingerboard ends on 22 fret 25 1/2" scale US-2 and similar necks are standard. Both round and square heel shapes are interchangeable at no extra cost. We can pre-drill the neck mounting holes the to take out the guesswork - guaranteed to work perfectly with our bodies ONLY - no up charge!

Truss rod access from the headstock is available to minimize lapses of adjustment insanity. Our top adjust truss rod uses a 9/64" Allen wrench (not included). Available for both guitar and bass necks.

For those who prefer a smooth vintage look, the truss rod adjustment at the heel is also available - as shown here on this mahogany/rosewood neck.

Note : 1 piece necks, and necks milled for R3, R4, or R5 Floyd locking nuts are only available with heel adjust.

Here you can see the rounded truss rod channel and routs for graphite stabilizing bars on this bass neck in progress.
